The action plan was adopted at a meeting of the committee, a multi-stakeholder body comprising representatives from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Health Service, the Ghana Education Service, civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations, the media and other key institutions.

The committee identified three priority areas requiring immediate attention: improving road infrastructure, intensifying public education and awareness, and strengthening the enforcement of road traffic regulations.

Under the infrastructure component, members proposed improving street lighting, rehabilitating and constructing zebra crossings, installing speed ramps at strategic locations and implementing other traffic-calming measures to enhance the safety of motorists, pedestrians and other road users.

The education and public awareness campaign will target schools, transport operators, commercial and private motorcycle riders, and other vulnerable road users. The committee also plans to educate individuals who sleep along railway lines and in unsafe public spaces on the dangers associated with such practices.

As part of its enforcement strategy, the committee will collaborate with relevant agencies to clamp down on offences such as illegal parking, indiscriminate dumping of sand and other materials on roads, riding motorcycles without protective helmets and other violations that endanger public safety.

The Ashaiman Municipal Coordinating Director, Ms. Jemima Apedo, said the establishment of the Road Safety Committee reflects the Assembly's commitment to addressing road safety challenges through coordinated action among key stakeholders.

She explained that members were selected based on their expertise and institutional mandates, adding that their collective efforts would help develop practical interventions to reduce road crashes and save lives. She urged the committee to work collaboratively to ensure the successful implementation of its programmes.

Mr. Felix Owusu, Senior Manager of the National Road Safety Authority for the Greater Accra Region, said the meeting provided an opportunity for stakeholders to identify the municipality's road safety challenges and develop practical, community-based solutions.

He noted that the committee would prepare a detailed work plan for integration into the Assembly's annual action plan to ensure road safety activities receive the necessary institutional backing and resources. He added that the committee could co-opt additional experts or institutions whenever specialised expertise was needed and encouraged members to remain committed to implementing the agreed activities effectively.

The Ashaiman MTTD Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) William Awere, disclosed that the municipality continues to record a high number of road traffic crashes, many of which occur on poorly lit roads at night.

He attributed a significant proportion of the crashes to reckless motorcycle riding, explaining that many riders disregard traffic regulations, ride through the middle of congested roads and frequently collide with oncoming motorcycles.

DSP Awere noted that despite continuous road safety education, many riders have failed to change their behaviour, resulting in numerous fatalities. He also highlighted two recent train-related accidents involving pedestrians, including the death of a 23-year-old man who was struck by a train while walking along the railway line despite repeated warning horns and emergency braking by the train driver.
