The Tempane District is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 15 of Municipalities and Districts in the Upper East Region.
The Tempane District Assembly is carved out of the Garu-Tempane District Assembly as one of the 38 newly created and upgraded District Assemblies in 2018.
Created with Legislative Instrument (LI) 2352 the Tempane District Assembly has its capital as Tempane.
It was inaugurated on March 15, 2018 alongside other 37 newly created districts.
The Tempane District is located to the south-eastern corner of the Upper East Region of Ghana. It covers an area of 1,230 Km2 and lies approximately on latitude 10o 38lN and110N and longitude 0o 06l E and 00 23l E.
The Tempane District shares boundaries with Garu District to the north, Pusiga District to north-east, Bunkpurugu Nyankpanduri District to south-east, and the Republic of Togo to the east.
The population of the District according to 2021 population and housing census stands at 86,993 with 41,268 males and 45,725 females.
