The Bia West District is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and forms part of the 9 MMDAs in the Western North Region.
The Bia West District was carved out of the erstwhile Bia District in 2012 by the Legislative Instrument (LI) 2014 and has a total surface area of 1,344 square kilometres. The District capital, Essam is located 420km to the northwest of Sekondi-Takoradi and 250km to Kumasi.
The Bia West District shares boundaries with the Bia East District to the north and east, the Republic of La Cote d’Ivoire to the west, and Juaboso District to the south.
The population of the District according to 2021 population and housing census stands at 115,881 with 59,955 males and 55,926 females.
