The Kassena Nankana West District is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the fifteen (15) Municipalities and Districts in the Upper East Region.
It is located approximately between latitude 10.97° North and longitude 01.10 ° West with its administrative capital as Paga. The paramount aim of creating this Assembly was to bring the business of governance to the doorsteps of the ordinary Ghanaian.
It was carved out of the Kassena Nankana Municipal in 2007 and inaugurated on Friday, 29th February 2008. The Local Government Instrument which established the district is Legislative Instrument (L.I) 1855.
The District covers a total land area of 812 square kilometres.
The District shares boundaries with Burkina Faso to the north, Builsa North District to the south, Sissala East Municipal in the Upper West Region to the west, and Kassena Nankana Municipal to the east.
The population of the District according to 2021 population and housing census stands at 90,735 with 43,909 males and 46,826 females.
