The Obuasi Municipal is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 43 of MMDAs in the Ashanti Region with Obuasi as the Administrative Capital where the famous and rich Anglo Gold Ashanti (formerly Obuasi Gold Mine) is located.


Obuasi Municipal was carved out of the erstwhile Adansi West District Assembly on the strength of executive instruments (E. I.) 15 of December, 2003 and Legislative Instrument (L.I) 1795 of 17th March, 2004.


The Municipality is located in the southern part of the Ashanti Region of Ghana, and is about 64 km from Kumasi, It lies between latitudes 5 º35N and 5 º65N, and longitudes 6º35’W and 6º90’W. It covers a total land area of 220.7 square km.


The Municipality is bounded on the south by Upper Denkyira East Municipal of the Central Region, east by Adansi South District, west by Amansie Central District, and north by Adansi North District.


The population of the Municipality according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census stands at 104,297 with 51,885 males 52,412 females.
