Location
Obuasi Municipal Assembly was carved out of the erstwhile Adansi West District Assembly on the strength of executive instruments (E. I.) 15 of December, 2003 and Legislative Instrument L. I. 1795 of 17th March, 2007.
The Municipality is located between latitude 5.35N and 5.65N and longitude 6.35N and 6.90N. It covers a land area of 162.4sq.km.
Topology & Drainage
The Municipality is located in the southern part of the Ashanti Region and has a rather undulating topography.
Climate & Vegetation
The climate is of the semi-equatorial type with a double rainfall regime. Mean annual rainfall ranges between 125mm and 175mm. Mean average annual temperature is 25.5°C and relative humidity is 75% - 80% in the wet season.
Vegetation
The vegetation is predominantly a degraded and semi-deciduous forest. The forest consists of limited species of hard wood which are harvested as lumber. The Municipality has nice scenery due to the hilly nature of the environment.
Geology & Soil
The mining activities are carried out by Messrs AngloGold Ashanti. Mining in Obuasi started in 1897 and has been going on uninterruptedly since then and the mine has produced to date 28 million ounces of Gold. The gold production today is derived primarily from underground operations.
