The Bawku Municipal is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 15 of Municipalities and Districts in the Upper East Region.
It is located approximately between latitudes 11o 111 and 100 401 North and longitude 0o 181w and 0o 61 E in the north-eastern corner of the region. The municipality has a total land area of about 257 sq km.
The administrative capital is Bawku. The Municipality was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2103.
It shares boundaries with Burkina Faso, the Republic of Togo, Bawku West District and Garu District to the north, east, west and the south respectively.
The population of the District according to 2021 population and housing census stands at 119,458 with 58,029 males and 61,429 females.
