The West Gonja Municipal is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 7 MMDAs in the Savannah Region. With its administrative capital at Damango, it was established in 2004 by a new legislative instrument (L.I.1775).
West Gonja Municipal is located to the west of Tamale, the Northern Regional capital of Ghana and it lays within longitude 10 5 1 and 20 581 west and latitude 80 321 and 100 2 1 North. The Municipality has a total land area of 4,700 sqkm and about 30% of the Municipality’s land represents forest reserves and Mole National Park.
It also shares boundaries to the south with Central Gonja District, Bole and Sawla Tuna Kalba Districts to the west, Wa East District to the north-west and North Gonja District to the east.
The population of the Municipality according to 2021 population and housing census stands at 63,449 with 32,270 males and 31,179 females.
