The Sissala West District is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 11 of Municipalities and Districts in the Upper West Region.

The Sissala West District is located in the north astern part of Ghana. It lies approximately between Longitude 213w to 2:36w and Latitude 10:00N 11:00N with the administrative capital as Gwollu. It covers a total Land area of 1,814 km, which is about 25% of the total Landmass of the Upper West Region.

The District shares border with Burkina Faso on the north which facilitate cross border socio-economic activities. On the east it shares boundaries with Sissala East Municipal, to the south with Wa East District, to the west with Jirapa Municipal and Lambussie Karni District respectively and to the south western boarders with Daffiama Bussie Issa District.

The population of the District according to 2021 population and housing census stands at63,828 with 31,556 males and32,727 females.
