The North East Region is one of the sixteen Regions in Ghana and forms part of the six newly created Regions.
The Region which was created on the 12th of February, 2019 with the Constitutional Instrument (C.I) 116 after a portion of residents of the Northern Region in a referendum dated 27th December, 2018 voted YES for the creation of the North East region with 99.67%. 205,804 out of 255,424 voters cast their ballots in the referendum.
North East Region is located in the north of the country and has its capital as Nalerigu. With the population of 440,558, the region has six Municipals and District Assemblies (MDAs) under its jurisdiction.
The MDAs under the Region are East Mamprusi Municipal, West Mamprusi Municipal, Bunkpurugu District, Yonyoo-Nasuan District, Mamprugu-Moagduri District and Chereponi District Assemblies.
The North East Region covers an area size of 9,072 Km2 and shares borders with Upper East Region on the north, on the east by Togo, on the south by the Northern Region, and on the west by the Upper West Region.
