The  Bolgatanga East District is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the 15 of Municipalities and Districts in the Upper East Region.

 

The Bolgatanga East District Assembly is carved out of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly as one of the  38 newly created and upgraded Districts Assemblies  in 2018.

 

Created with Legislative Instrument (LI) 2350, the Bolgatanga East District Assembly has its capital as Zuarungu. It was inaugurated on March 15, 2018 alongside other 37 newly created districts.   


Bolgatanga East District is located in the south eastern part of the Upper East Region and in terms of size, it covers a total land area of 73 square kilometres

Bolgatanga East District is bordered to the north by the Bongo District, south and east by Talensi and Nabdam Districts and Bolgatanga Municipality to the west.

The population of the District according to 2021 population and housing census stands at 38,824 with 18,836 males and 19,988 females.
