The Kassena Nankana Municipal is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, and forms part of the fifteen (15) Municipalities and Districts in the Upper East Region.

The Kassena Nankana Municipal lies within the Guinea Savannah woodlands. It is located approximately between latitude 11°10’ and 10°3’ North and longitude 10°1’ West. The Administrative Capital of the Municipality is Navrongo.

The Municipal share boundaries with Bongo District and Bolgatanga Municipal to the east. West Mamprusi Municipal to the south, to the west with Builsa South District, Kassena Nankana West District and Builsa North District respectively, and finally the Municipality shares boundaries with Burkina Faso to the North.

The District covers a total land area of 865 square kilometres.

The population of the Municipality according to 2021 population and housing census stands at 99,895 with 48,658 males and 51,237 females.
