Upper Denkyira West DCE Lauded for Proactive Flood Mitigation Efforts

Central Region – The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has publicly commended the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Upper Denkyira West, Isaac Nsiah, for spearheading a major pre-emptive dredging and desilting initiative aimed at curbing perennial flooding in the area.

The praise was delivered by the Central Regional Director of NADMO, Kwesi Dawood, who highlighted the critical importance of the project ahead of the rainy season. The extensive work focuses on clearing choked drains, streams, and key sections of the River Aman within the district.

According to Hon. Dawood, the strategic intervention addresses several core flood risk factors:

· Increased Channel Capacity: By deepening and widening the River Aman, the channel can now contain a significantly higher volume of water before it overflows its banks.

· Improved Hydraulic Efficiency: The removal of obstructions such as sandbars, fallen trees, and accumulated waste reduces friction and "backwater" effects. This allows floodwater to drain more rapidly away from vulnerable, low-lying communities.

· Crucial Support for Pump-Dependent Areas: In flat landscapes like Denkyira Jameso Nkwanta, where the River Aman’s natural flow is sluggish, dredging is essential. Clear drainage channels ensure that mechanical pumps can operate effectively to move water out.

· Infrastructure Maintenance: The project specifically targeted silt accumulation around critical infrastructure like bridges and culverts, preventing localized "bottlenecks" that often cause destructive upstream flooding.

“The leadership demonstrated by Hon. Isaac Nsiah in championing this exercise is exemplary and proactive,” stated Hon. Kwesi Dawood. “This is not just about reaction during disasters, but about smart prevention. This work will go a long way in reducing the flood risk to lives, property, and livelihoods in Upper Denkyira West this coming season and beyond.”

Residents in areas historically prone to flooding have expressed relief at the sight of the cleared waterways. Many recall the annual distress caused by inundated homes and farms.

When contacted, Hon. Isaac Nsiah reiterated his commitment to the district’s resilience. “We cannot control the rains, but we can control our preparedness. This dredging is an investment in the safety and well-being of our people. We are committed to sustaining this effort to protect our communities,” the DCE stated.

NADMO officials have urged other Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to emulate this proactive approach to disaster risk reduction, emphasizing that prevention is invariably more cost-effective and less traumatic than disaster response.
