The intervention, funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), underscores the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that persons with disabilities are actively included in the district’s development efforts.
Out of the total beneficiaries, 49 individuals received various working tools tailored to their respective trades, while 25 others were each given GH¢2,000 to expand their businesses and improve income generation.
Items distributed included deep freezers, refrigerators, ovens with accessories, motorised spraying machines, cassava grating machines, fufu pounding machines, a welding machine, and pastry-making tools, all aimed at boosting productivity and strengthening economic independence among beneficiaries..jpg)
Addressing the beneficiaries, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Alhassan Ibrahim, emphasized that disability should never be seen as inability. He noted that with the right support, persons with disabilities can realise their full potential and contribute meaningfully to community and economic development.
“This intervention is not only about providing support, but also about restoring dignity, promoting independence, and creating equal opportunities for all,” he stated.
District Coordinating Director, Evans Mark Andoh, explained that the items distributed were based on requests submitted by beneficiaries following a thorough needs assessment. He added that the initiative was funded from the three per cent allocation of the DACF reserved for persons with disabilities.
He further noted that the fund also caters for other needs of PWDs, including payment of school fees, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration, medical expenses, and capacity-building programmes.
Other speakers, including the Presiding Member, Hon. Stephen Kuma Angu, and the Head of Community Development and Social Welfare, Mr. Elijah Atta Quansah, encouraged beneficiaries to utilise the support effectively to improve their living conditions. They also cautioned caregivers to act responsibly and avoid misusing the assistance meant for beneficiaries.
The initiative marks another important milestone in promoting inclusive growth in the Wassa East District, as beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Assembly and pledged to use the support to build sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families.
