Akuapim South Assembly Engages GPRTU over Fare Increases on Aburi Routes

The Akuapim South Municipal Assembly, led by Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Hon. Paul Osae Offei, has engaged the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) over concerns surrounding alleged fare increases on major routes linking Aburi to Accra, Nsawam and Madina.

The engagement focused on concerns over transport operators charging fares that are not officially approved, a development that has raised concerns among commuters who use the affected routes.

During the engagement, the Assembly called on transport unions to ensure that approved fares are strictly enforced by drivers and operators. The unions were also urged to prominently display fare boards at transport stations to enable passengers to know the authorised fares and reduce disputes between commuters and drivers.

The Assembly further called for appropriate sanctions against drivers found charging unauthorised fares.

As part of efforts to resolve the issue, the transport unions were encouraged to engage the Madina Transport Union to address the fare concerns affecting passengers travelling between Aburi and Madina.

Hon. Paul Osae Offei also directed transport operators to stop loading passengers at unauthorised roadside locations and instead operate from designated transport stations.

The Assembly said it would continue working closely with transport unions and other stakeholders to promote transparent fares, orderly transport operations and improved services for commuters within the Akuapim South Municipality.

The Akuapim South Municipal Assembly, headquartered in Aburi, is located along the Accra–Koforidua highway and includes communities such as Aburi, Kitase, Ahwerase, Berekuso and Pakro.
