Kasoa old market demolition displaces hundreds of traders

The early morning operation on April 7 saw sections of the market pulled down as part of a planned redevelopment project aimed at modernising the facility and easing congestion in the area. Reports indicate that about 800 traders operating from temporary structures, along with several others in the enclave, were affected by the exercise.
Municipal authorities defended the demolition, stating that adequate notice had been given to traders ahead of the exercise. They explained that the redevelopment forms part of a broader plan to improve infrastructure and decongest the Kasoa Central Business District.
However, many traders have strongly disputed these claims, arguing that communication was unclear and insufficient. Some claimed they were only informed shortly before the demolition, leaving them little time to relocate their goods.
According to the Municipal physical planning officer of the assembly Steven Kakraba said the Assembly has proposed the Iron City Market as an alternative trading site, but several affected traders have rejected the option, describing it as inadequate and unsuitable for their businesses.
The demolition has raised concerns about the immediate economic impact on traders, many of whom rely on daily sales for survival. While authorities insist the move will bring long term benefits, calls are growing for better resettlement plans and support for those displaced.
