Delivered through the office of the Deput y Director General in charge of Protocol at the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the aid targets victims of a devastating fire that razed parts of the bustling Kasoa New Market.
The donated consignment includes bags of maize and rice, cartons of cooking oil, mosquito repellents, and packs of soaps critical supplies to help displaced market women meet basic needs amid the crisis. Assembly officials wasted no time in distributing the items, expressing profound thanks for the timely intervention.
"This support comes at a pivotal moment when our market women are at their most vulnerable," said a municipal spokesperson. "It alleviates immediate suffering and underscores the President's commitment to community welfare."
The inferno, which broke out late at night, destroyed dozens of stalls selling everything from fresh produce to household goods, leaving hundreds of traders counting their losses. Many families, who rely on daily market sales for survival, now face uncertain futures without income or shelter for their wares. The incident has strained local resources, highlighting the need for robust fire safety measures in Ghana's vibrant markets.
NADMO's involvement reflects its mandate to coordinate national disaster response, often bridging government efforts with on-the-ground relief in fire-prone commercial hubs like Kasoa.
While the relief provides short-term relief, the Assembly emphasized the long term challenge. "The fire has imposed a heavy burden on these hardworking traders, who urgently need ongoing support to rebuild their livelihoods," officials noted.
They issued a strong call for additional assistance from donors, businesses, and the public to fund market reconstruction and help restore operations. "We welcome any help to reconstruct the New Market and get our women back to business," the statement urged.
