Amenfi Central’s Water Security Crisis: Galamsey Pollution Threatens Clean Drinking Sources
The Amenfi Central District relies on a variety of sources for drinking water, including small-town water systems, boreholes, hand-dug wells, streams, and rivers.

These sources are vital for households and communities across the district, especially in rural areas where boreholes and supply systems are limited.
Pollution from Galamsey Activities
Unfortunately, many of the rivers and streams have been heavily polluted by the activities of galamsey operators. The destructive mining practices, particularly along river bodies, have contaminated water sources, making them unsafe for consumption. Communities that depend solely on these rivers and streams now face acute water shortages, forcing residents to travel long distances in search of potable water.
Existing Infrastructure in the District
To address water needs, the district currently has 158 boreholes and two water supply systems located at Manso Amenfi and Adjakaa Manso. While these facilities provide some relief, they are not enough to meet the growing demand for clean water, especially as pollution continues to spread.
Challenges and Risks
The shortage of clean water poses serious health risks and disrupts daily life. Families are left vulnerable to waterborne diseases, while farmers and businesses struggle to cope with the lack of reliable water supply. Without urgent intervention, the district’s water security crisis could worsen, undermining socio-economic development.
Call for Urgent Action
Stakeholders are calling for stronger enforcement against illegal mining, expansion of boreholes, and investment in additional water supply systems. Protecting water resources is critical not only for public health but also for the long-term sustainability of Amenfi Central.
Amenfi Central’s water resources are under serious threat. With rivers and streams polluted and communities facing shortages, urgent action is needed to safeguard clean drinking water. The future of the district depends on protecting its water sources and ensuring that every household has access to safe, reliable supply.
