Three Paramountcies Anchor Traditional Governance

The metropolis is traditionally organized into three paramount areas—Sekondi, Essikadu, and Takoradi.

  • Nana Kobina Nketsiah V serves as the paramount chief of Essikadu
  • Nana Whinney, since 2013, acts as the caretaker paramount chief of Sekondi.
  • Osahene Katekyi Busumakura III leads the Takoradi traditional area.
These traditional councils, supported by various sub-chiefs, meet regularly to deliberate on development issues, cultural preservation, and community welfare.

Urban Communities Show Declining Communal Spirit

Despite the strong traditional structures, communal spirit remains low in the highly urbanized zones of the metropolis. Areas such as Takoradi, Sekondi, Tanokrom, and Kwesimintsim—representing 96.4% of the population—are experiencing weakened community participation due to rapid urbanization and modern lifestyles.

Peri-Urban Areas Maintain Strong Community Bonds

In contrast, peri-urban communities including Whindo, Assakae, Mpatado, Kansaworado, and Enoe continue to uphold vibrant communal values. Residents actively engage in community activities, demonstrating unity and cooperation that support local development.

Call to Revive Communalism for Development

Local leaders emphasize the need to promote and strengthen communalism across the metropolis. Reviving this spirit is seen as essential for improving sanitation, supporting development projects, and preserving the cultural identity that defines Sekondi-Takoradi.
