Amenfi Central Faces Water Security Crisis as Galamsey Pollutes Rivers and Streams
The Amenfi Central District is grappling with a growing water security challenge as illegal mining activities continue to pollute vital water sources.

The district relies heavily on small-town water systems, boreholes, hand-dug wells, streams, and rivers for drinking water. However, many of these rivers and streams have been contaminated by the destructive operations of galamsey operators, leaving communities that depend solely on these sources in acute shortage.
Currently, the district has 158 boreholes and two water supply systems located at Manso Amenfi and Adjakaa Manso, which provide some relief. Yet, the demand for clean water far outweighs the available supply, especially in rural communities where boreholes are limited and streams remain the primary source of drinking water.

The pollution of rivers and streams has not only created health risks but also disrupted daily life, forcing residents to travel long distances in search of potable water. Local leaders and environmental advocates warn that unless urgent measures are taken to curb illegal mining and expand safe water infrastructure, the district could face a worsening crisis.
Stakeholders are calling for stronger enforcement against galamsey, investment in additional boreholes, and expansion of water supply systems to ensure that every household has access to clean and safe drinking water. Protecting water resources is critical to the health, livelihoods, and future development of Amenfi Central.
