Atwima Kwanwoma DCE Tours Nweneso No. 2 Reclamation Sites, Urges Miners to Go Green

The District Chief Executive for Atwima Kwanwoma, Hon. Grace Agyemang Asamoah, has called for collective action against galamsey as restoration works gain momentum.

She gave the advice when inspecting ongoing reclamation works at degraded mining sites in Nweneso No. 2, assessing how far the land can be restored for future productive use.

The tour, part of the Assembly’s broader environmental recovery drive, examined the progress made in backfilling pits and rehabilitating vegetation on lands scarred by small-scale mining.

“I am optimistic that once reclamation is complete, these areas can be turned into meaningful assets for sustainable development,” Hon. Asamoah said.

She appealed to small-scale miners to take environmental responsibility seriously—covering excavated pits and restoring sites after operations. She stressed that proper reclamation is not just about aesthetics but about protecting lives, preserving ecosystems, and creating opportunities for future land use.

The DCE reaffirmed the government’s resolve to fight illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, while promoting responsible and eco-friendly practices.

“The fight against illegal mining cannot be won by one institution alone,” she noted. “It requires a united front—government agencies, security forces, traditional leaders, miners, and community members all have a role to play.”

She further stated that the Assembly would continue monitoring mining activities and collaborating with relevant bodies to ensure full compliance with environmental laws and standards.

Residents of Nweneso No. 2 welcomed the DCE’s visit, praising her firm stance on enforcement. They commended the Assembly for maintaining a visible presence in mining-affected communities and urged that the monitoring momentum be sustained.

Hon. Asamoah was joined on the inspection by the District Information Officer, District Environmental Officer, members of the District Taskforce, and personnel from the Ghana Police Service.

The exercise forms part of the Assembly’s broader commitment to restoring degraded lands and promoting sustainable development across the Atwima Kwanwoma District.
