President of the National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG), Alfred Asiedu Adjei, said the initiative is intended to improve the effectiveness of assembly members, particularly those serving in rural and hard-to-reach communities.

According to him, the motorbikes will significantly enhance mobility, enabling assembly members to effectively monitor development projects and deepen engagement with their constituents. He noted that the intervention is expected to improve service delivery and ensure members discharge their responsibilities more efficiently.

Mr. Asiedu Adjei apologised for the delay in the procurement of the motorbikes, attributing it to the change in government following the 2024 general elections. He explained that the new administration had to review procurement processes and undertake due diligence before proceeding with the acquisition and subsequent distribution.

He assured that NALAG remains committed to collaborating with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, to ensure the timely delivery of the motorbikes for their intended purpose.

Allowances Paid to Assembly Members

Touching on allowances, the NALAG President, who also serves as the Assembly Member for the Avenor Electoral Area, commended the government for fulfilling its campaign promise to pay allowances to assembly members nationwide.

As part of its reset agenda on decentralisation, the government, through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, released funds for the payment of allowances to District Assemblies to enhance their effectiveness and efficiency.

Under the arrangement, each of the 9,085 assembly members across the country is to receive GH¢1,300 per month. Mr. Asiedu Adjei confirmed receipt of his share and expressed appreciation to the government for the support.

He further disclosed that the Association has initiated plans to ensure that the payment of allowances becomes statutory, in order to safeguard it from being discontinued by future governments.
