Yilo Krobo Assembly Supports 108 PWDs with Livelihood Items and Cash

The Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly in the Eastern Region has provided livelihood support to 108 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) under the 2026 Persons with Disability Common Fund initiative, as part of efforts to reduce poverty, promote inclusion and improve the economic wellbeing of vulnerable persons in the Municipality.

The intervention reaffirms the Assembly’s commitment to promoting dignity, social inclusion and sustainable economic opportunities for Persons with Disabilities across the Yilo Krobo Municipality.

Out of 164 applications received, 108 applicants were approved following needs assessments, verification and a thorough vetting process conducted by the Disability Fund Management Committee. The beneficiaries comprise 27 from the Somanya Zonal Area and 81 from the Nkurakan, Agogo and Sikabeng Zonal Areas.

The support was tailored to the specific livelihood needs and interests of beneficiaries. Items distributed included 22 chest freezers, four double-door fridges, 17 fufu processing machines, 11 cassava processing machines, one tomato processing machine, 10 polytanks, six industrial machines and one knitting machine.

Other beneficiaries received 200 bags of charcoal, onions, maize, store provisions, farm inputs, fence wire, 50 foldable chairs and an irrigation machine/pump. Two beneficiaries also received support for animal rearing involving goats and sheep, while nine beneficiaries received pairs of crutches as assistive devices.

In addition, five beneficiaries received cash support to establish or strengthen various livelihood activities, including cold store operations, shoemaking, container/shop businesses, caregiving services and smoked fish trading.

The intervention is expected to help beneficiaries become more economically independent, improve their household incomes and create sustainable sources of livelihood for themselves and their families.

Speaking at the presentation, the Assembly expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for increasing the allocation for the Disability Fund from 3 per cent to 5 per cent, noting that the increase has enabled the Assembly to support more beneficiaries and provide higher-value items capable of making a greater impact on their livelihoods.

The beneficiaries were urged to regard the support as an opportunity to transform their lives rather than merely as items received. They were encouraged to use the items responsibly and strictly for their intended purposes, maintain them properly and cooperate with monitoring officers to ensure that the intervention achieves its intended impact.

The Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly reiterated its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to promote the inclusion, welfare and economic empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and ensure that development opportunities reach all sections of society.
