Afigya-Kwabre South Faces Sanitation Challenges Amidst Growing Waste Management Concerns

In terms of sanitation infrastructure, the district records 2,353 household toilets, 113 institutional toilets, and 44 public toilet facilities. The District Assembly has prioritized the provision of institutional toilets, particularly in public schools, while relying on public-private partnerships for the development and management of communal public toilets.

To improve sanitation standards, the Environmental Health Unit and the Building Inspectorate have been encouraged to strictly enforce regulations requiring all new residential and commercial buildings to include toilet facilities before occupancy. This measure is expected to reduce dependence on public toilet facilities and promote better hygiene practices.

However, solid waste management remains a major challenge. Many communities continue to face difficulties with waste collection services, with concerns frequently raised about delays in the operations of waste management providers, including Zoomlion Ghana Limited. Reports indicate that household bins and communal skip containers often remain uncollected for extended periods, leading to environmental and public health risks.

To address these challenges, the Assembly is being encouraged to either establish its own final disposal site or collaborate with neighbouring districts to develop a shared disposal facility. Such measures are expected to significantly improve waste management efficiency and enhance environmental sanitation across the district.
