Infrastructure Development Utility Services

Utility services particularly electricity, water and sanitation, telecommunications are very crucial for the development of the district. Most of the communities proposed to have electricity have been connected through the Government of Ghana’s electricity expansion programme. This has improved the lives of the people and economic activities are gradually becoming brisk in the communities. 

Water supply has improved considerably over the past five years. Communities have benefited from pipe-borne water and boreholes through the assistance of CWSA’s Small Town Water Supply Scheme, and with the support of institutions like JICA, AMER, ARAP, ADRA etc. As much as over 65% of the people have access to safe water compared to the national average of 38.4%. The situation for sanitation is not impressive. The percentage of population with access to and using hygienic sanitation facilities stands at 30%.

Telecommunication services in the district have been developing over the years, especially with the introduction of the mobile phone net-works. Urban communities (including Kibi, Tafo, Kukurantumi, Asiakwa etc) are currently connected to the national telecom grid, while other private telecommunication services have covered over 80% of the District. Currently most communities have mobile commercial telephones (areebe-areeba, one touch to one touched.)  This situation has drastically reduced extent of travel and physical contact within and outside the district. 

Road and Rail Network

The district has a fair distribution of accessible roads majority of which link the Accra-Kumasi trunk road. Most people who live along the Accra -Kumasi main road corridor have less travel time. Areas like Annenberg and Obi are cut away from the district main transportation network for lack of access road. Presently, the railway transport is not in operation in the district. This adversely affects the easy movement of heavy goods and other services.
