Rainfall
There are two rainy seasons, the major one from mid-April to early July and the minor from September to November. The average annual rainfall varies from 900mm to 1100mm with more than 50 per cent of it occurring in the major season. Rainfall generally is inadequate and not evenly distributed during the major and minor season, which adversely affects both crop cultivation and animal husbandry in the District. The district is now investing in commercial and irrigation to reduce the production loss of the farmers.
Temperature
The mean temperature is 27ºC, the minimum is 22ºC and maximum is 32ºC. March is the hottest month while July and August are the coolest months. Average relative humidity is about 80%, making the weather quite conducive for agricultural and recreational purposes.
Vegetation
The District lies within the Tropical Savannah Grassland zone. The Volta River runs through the district with many communities totted along the banks of the River. This makes the district a suitable place for large-scale agricultural activities such as crop cultivation, animal husbandry and commercial fish farming.
The vegetation is dense along the Volta River and also along the other River basins. This is basically due to the presence of more fertile and better subsoil moisture. This vegetation consists of baobab, mangoes, oil palm, silk cotton, acacia etc. The vegetation is sparse beyond the Volta basin, and is predominantly grassland, interspersed, with neem trees and guinea grass and fan palms.
