Economy of the Municipality
Internally Generated Funds (IGF)
Table 1.7 provides an on overview of the IGF performance as well as the major source of IGF in the Municipality. As shown the Assembly could not achieve it revenue set targets for 2018 and 2020. The problem in 2018 have been attributed to the fact that as a maiden Assembly (created in 2018) management did not have very credible data on which to set realistic revenue targets.
Additionally, it’s faced some teething problems in collecting the revenue since most tax payers had difficulties establishing where exactly they should pay their taxes. The short fall in meeting revenue target in 2020 was however largely due to the outbreak of the Corona Virus (Covid-19) Pandemic.
This is because as part of government measures to control the pandemic a lockdown was instituted throughout the country making it impossible for revenue collectors pursue taxpayers. Additionally, the lockdown led to the close down of many business and shops which slowed down the local economy reducing the potential sources for revenue collection. The forgoing indicates that the Assembly should explore ingenious ways of collecting revenue that reduces man to man contact.
Figure 11 also provides an idea of the major sources of IGF when data from IGF collection for 2020 is used as a proxy. As shown Licenses is the major contributor (75%). Revenue areas under licenses includes Building Permits and Business Operating Permits. Taxes on properties/property rates is also the second major contributor to the IGF generated (11%). However, considering the fact that the Municipality is virtually built up and very urbanised, it can be said that the potential still exists in making revenue from property rates a key source of revenue for the Assembly. Major issues affecting the collection of revenue in the Assembly have included among

Business
The Ga North Municipality is blessed with one of the major transport routes of the country-the N6 thus Accra-Nsawam road which is a major highway. As such the Municipality provides conducive environment for doing business.
The commercial sector is therefore said to be the largest employer in the Municipality. A wide range of commodities comprising mainly of agricultural produce and industrial goods dominate this sector. Major marketing centres includes Achimota and Ofankor. Even though some modern infrastrure have been provided at these areas, a lot still need to be done to decongest the areas. There is therefore the need to expand the existing commercial infrastructure. There is also the need for the Assembly to expedite work on the potential markets dotted all over the Municipality. These include Pokuase, and Ofankor.
A number of economic and financial services and other infrastructure facilities also exist whilst others are being developed to serve as catalyst for the rapid development of the Municipality. These include telecommunication and banking facilities. The financial institutions located within the Municipality include; Ga Rural Bank at ABC Junction, Pokuase, Commercial Bank, Ecobank and Other Micro finance institutions have recently been established
A significant percentage of the number of fuel filling stations being established in the Region can be found in the Municipality. The major fuel service stations or oil marketing companies which are present in the Municipality include Total, Shell, Excel, Goil, Glory Oil, etc.
The Manufacturing sector has seen some remarkable growth in the past few years with most of them in the Pure Water Production Sector and Agricultural Processing. The widespread mining and quarrying of large deposits of sand, stone, clay and laterite materials by both large and small scale operators such as Construction Pioneers and Sonitra as well as operatives of the Sand and Stone Winners association has also contributed to the growth of the construction industry as such a number of Aluminium Roofing companies such as Rocksters and Instyle have sprung up.
