This achievement demonstrated the hospital’s dedication to providing quality healthcare services to safeguard the health of people in the municipality.
Dr. Martha Ampadu, the Obstetrician Gynaecologist and Head of Department at the Keta Municipal Hospital, indicated that bleeding after delivery was a one of the major cause of maternal mortality in the municipality and country at large but the hospital has worked tirelessly and identified and addressed the issue.
She explained that a Quality Improvement Team (QIT) was formed after a maternal mortality incident in early April 2024, where a mother passed away due to excessive bleeding after delivery.
"The team examined and studied all maternal death cases from 2018 to date and identified some common challenges which were tackled that enabled the hospital to achieve this milestone," she said.
She said that the Keta Municipal Hospital has a high delivery rate with an average of 100 monthly deliveries and despite challenges, the hospital managed to maintain a zero maternal mortality rate over the past year.
Dr. Ampadu outlined some challenges associated with maternal mortality which include inadequate blood in the blood bank and delayed in reporting to the hospital for delivery, while to address the challenges, the hospital collaborated with other facilities at Aflao, Abor and others to ensure a steady blood supply.
"We are appealing to families, friends, and blood donors to donate blood to help sustain the health of pregnant women because such supports are crucial in maintaining the hospital's zero maternal mortality rate."
She noted that the hospital's aim was to either improve or maintain its zero maternal mortality rate to safeguard the lives of pregnant mothers, and the goal and commitment of the hospital was to provide quality healthcare services to all.
Dr. Ampadu said that the Keta Municipal Hospital's achievement of one year without maternal mortality was a significant milestone that needed to be celebrated which has also proven the hospital's dedication to quality healthcare services, combined with the efforts of its Quality Improvement Team which has contributed to this success.
Some lactating and pregnant mothers at the Keta municipality hospital maternity and children ward expressed satisfaction about the achievement and thanked the hospital staff for their efforts.
They appealed to the government and other corporate organisations to help provide all the equipment needed that would help deliver better and quality health services in the area for the benefit of all.
