Ghana’s Parliament has passed legislation to revert three public universities to names that reflect their core academic missions, removing honorific titles instituted under the previous government.

The change, approved on Friday, December 19, 2025, sees the following institutions renamed:

* Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, Wa will now be known as the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, Wa.

* C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Navrongo reverts to the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Navrongo.

* Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Kumasi is renamed the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Kumasi.

The move fulfills a policy announced by the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to review what it terms the "politicization" of public institutions. The administration argues that university names should emphasize institutional purpose and maintain political neutrality, rather than honour individual political figures.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu stated the decision followed consultations with university stakeholders and civil society. "Our public universities must be citadels of learning, defined by their mission, not by partisan symbolism," he said.

The legislative action faced opposition from the Minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus. They criticized the move as erasing the legacy of the Akufo-Addo administration and diminishing national recognition for esteemed contributors to Ghana's development.

The new names take effect immediately upon official gazetting. The affected universities are expected to begin updating their official branding, signage, and records accordingly.
