In an exclusive interview, the Chairperson underscored the critical role of the media in disseminating the Committee’s findings, stating, “The media is the one that takes our workings out there to Ghanaians on how we are faring and what we are doing to protect the public purse.”
Highlighting a landmark achievement, the Chairperson revealed that collaborative efforts with the Audit Service had led to the retrieval of approximately GH¢12.7 billion in misused public funds. “We have been able to bring back, or retrieve, close to 12.7 billion cedis,” the Chairperson announced, adding that a special public forum would be held to detail these recoveries once Parliament resumes.
“It is not just a matter of putting the infractions in there,” the Chairperson emphasized. “We are also working to make sure that all those who are cited… we go after them.”
Beyond financial recovery, the Chairperson framed the Committee’s hearings as a vital platform for public accountability and civic education. The core mission, they stated, is to ensure “that the people of Ghana deserve to know what we use their taxes for.”
“By sitting in and asking agencies to answer queries… we also communicate to the people of Ghana what their taxes have been used for,” the Chairperson explained. This transparency, they argued, empowers citizens to “have a voice as to what is not going right and how they can help all of us make it better.”
The Chairperson expressed strong optimism that the Committee’s work—combining public hearings, the pursuit of recoveries, and the application of sanctions—would drastically reduce future financial infractions. “When people are called to answer, and when requisite sanctions are applied… these two things can go a long way to help us.”
In a final note of confidence, the Chairperson stated, “I am very happy with how we have been conducting our business… I believe that the people of Ghana are happy with the information that we give out to them.”
The announcement of the substantial recovery and the commitment to deeper public engagement signals a robust push for transparency as the Committee prepares to present its full report to the nation.
