SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURE

Markets

There are three main markets in the District, two are in the Peki Town Council. These are at Kpeve and Peki and Dzemeni. In the Tongor Kpalime Area Council Area these form the focus of commerce and trade in the District. All the markets are weekly except Kpeve, which is twice weekly, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Kpeve Market

The Volta Lake side market of Dzemeni attracts traders and goods from all over the country, particularly fish, charcoal and cattle across the lake from the Afram Plains.

The physical infrastructure provided is not adequate for the level of activity in all the markets. The market requires some investment in facilities.  The need to improve basic infrastructure is even more pronounced with the Dzemeni and Kpeve markets.

Peki market is not very vibrant.

The bi-weekly Kpeve market is well patronized by traders from in and outside the district, dealing in farm produce such as maize, cassava, yams and vegetables, fish and manufactured commodities of all kinds. The physical infrastructure provided is not adequate for the letel of activity. The market requires some investment  in facilities. The need to improve basic infrastructure is even more pronounced with the Dzemeni market.

Post and Telecommunications

The only two post offices in the District are located at Kpeve and Peki. In terms of telecommunication, only a few communication centers exist in Kpeve and Peki. Only Peki is connected to Spacefon network. Telephone penetration is really low in the District.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
The Assembly is yet to be connected to the internet, though four laptop computers of the Assembly have MTN modems with which internet service is accessed.
However, the Assembly with collaborative funding by UNDP opened a community ICT Centre at Peki-Avetile, but it has not been functioning well due to frequent breakdown of the machines and inefficient management.
