Ghana is currently operating Health Insurance Scheme.  The scheme is designed to offer affordable and good medical care, especially to the poor and vulnerable among Ghana’s 20 million people. The scheme is a viable alternative to the cash and carry system.


Asuogyaman Health Insurance Scheme


The Asuogyaman Health Insurance Scheme was officially inaugurated in the Asuogyaman District is December 2004. The registration exercise is made up of recording of personal information of the subscriber, Photo-taking and making payments for those in the informal sector.

The total number of registered subscribers in the district as at 31st December 2005 was twenty two thousand, four hundred and twenty seven (22,427).  Currently, a total of thirty one thousand, three hundred and twenty (31, 320) people have registered with the Health Insurance scheme.

So far the scheme has engaged nineteen (19) Service Providers made up of two (2) private clinics, one (1) Quasi Government Hospital, all the thirteen (13) Health Centres within the District and private pharmacy and two (2) Hospitals outside the District.

The following are the details; Naabs Clinic Hedwigs Clinic and Maternity Home, VRA Hospital, St. Martins Hospital, Atua Government Hospital and Juapong Pharmacy at Juapong.
In the first quarter, there were 1, 778 hospital Attendances of which an amount of Fifty Two Million One Hundred and Fifteen Thousand, Eight Hundred and Seventy Six cedis (52, 115, 876) was paid.

In the second Quarter Three Hundred and Eleven Million, Ninety Five Thousand and Two Hundred Twenty One Cedis (311, 095, 221) was paid as cost of medical bills for 6,218 Hospital attendances. The National health Scheme is designed to offer affordable medical care, especially to the poor and vulnerable among Ghana’s 22 million people.

The scheme is designed to be a solution for the health care sector and the only viable alternative to the rigid system of cash and carry.
The NHIS is built on several key principles including health for all, affordable health care for the people of Ghana, focus on quality health care.
