EDUCATIONAL SECTOR

To ensure effective implementation of educational plans and programmes the Jirapa District is sub-divided into twelve (8) circuits namely: Jirapa, Han, Gbare, Konzokala, Tizza, Ullo, Cheboggo and Sabuli

The total enrolment at all levels of school in the District at the beginning of 2005/2006 academic year stood at 29421 as against 26,177 2004/2005.  This indicates an annual increase of12.3%. This increase was as a result of the introduction of the Capitation Grant.  The activities of some NGOs such as the Catholic Relief Services as well as UNICEF have also contributed immensely particularly by attracting the girl-child.  Though the increase is significant, there are still school going age children not attending school. There is also a significant dropout rate. This is negatively affecting the literacy rate in the District. The pupil or student teacher ratios are as follows: Pre-School-59: 1, Primary-49: 1, JSS-27: 1, and SSS-18: 1

The above shows a shortfall of teachers at all levels.  What is worth noting is that there are a significant number of untrained teachers at all the levels.  This also affects quality teaching and learning.

School Infrastructure

School infrastructure has received much attention over the years under the District Assembly Common Fund.  Other development partners who have also contributed immensely in this direction include the   European Union (EU), District Wide-Assistance Project (DWAP) and Action Aid International Ghana.

Despite the above significant steps, many schools especially the pre-school have no structures.  Out of 55 pre-schools, only 5 KG’s have classroom accommodation.  The rest of the 50 are either under trees or temporal structures.  At the Primary school level, most of the structures are in deplorable state that needs immediate rehabilitation and expansion to help address the problem of an increasing enrolment.  Two of the SSS which are most deprived in the District have also seen some infrastructural development but more still needs to be done. With the increasing enrolment, furniture is inadequate at all levels despite the effort of the District Assembly and other stakeholders in that direction.

Most basic Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMS) have been provided.  These range from textbooks to teaching aids.  However, additional provision needs to be made as the enrolment level is increasing due to the implementation of Capitation Grant and the NEPAD School Feeding Programme.
