Child Protection

Child neglect, drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, verbal and physical abuse, discrimination, bullying, adolescent sexual and reproductive health issues, unsafe places and child labor are the predominate child protection issues identified in the Municipality. This situation is caused by complex and interwoven issues including; Poor parent-child relationships, socioeconomic stress from financial issues and unemployment.

Also, cultural practices and lack of support from family friends, neighbors or the community amongst others. For the plan period, child protection programs will be promoted by the Department and other stakeholders. Programs will run concurrently with monitoring to ensure that child protection issues are well embraced within the Municipality.

Social Protection

The Municipality houses some of the most affluent neighborhoods in Accra, this makes it easy to overlook in terms of gender inequality, poverty and vulnerability. However, there are numerous vulnerable groups in need of social protection interventions such as women, children, people living with HIV/AIDS, adolescent, elderly, the physically challenged etc..

A total of 6,890 vulnerable and marginalized persons have been identified in the Municipality as at 2020. There exists incidence of poverty too in the Municipality as indicated in Table 1.8 below. The Assembly as the Planning Authority of the Municipality supports in the promotions of the following; LEAP, School Feeding, Capitation Grants, NHIS, and Free SHS programmes etc. as social protection interventions. The Assembly will mainstream social protection in the planning and implementation of development activities and collaborate with local and International Agencies and Non-Governmental Organization to ensure the protection of vulnerable groups.
