The one-storey building project, which began in 2020, is currently at the decking level, with all the pillars erected for the ground floor.
The project is a community self-initiated intervention, financed by proceeds from the community members’ contribution, well-wishers and proceeds from the community’s annual Tigsitaaba festival instituted in 2019.
The move by the chiefs and people of the community aims to provide a conducive and well stocked modern reference facility for underprivileged pupils, students and researchers to access relevant materials and internet connections for varying fields of study.
At the 2024 Tigsitaaba festival held at the weekend in Yorogo which was characterised by cultural displays, including war dance, local guitar among others, Naba Kosomo Legbe Serum-Tingabila-Legbe Goo, Divisional Chief of the area, appealed for support to complete the project.
According to the Chief, education is a great tool when well harnessed could propel accelerated individual and community development and underscored the need for increased effort and investment to reap the desired benefits.
He appealed to members of the community both in Ghana and the Diaspora and non- governmental organisations to assist in the building of the project to ensure that it was completed to offer school children, especially those at the basic level the opportunity to learn.
“Let us endeavor to show commitment, contribute generously, and attend the festival promptly in order to leave the right mark for the future as we work towards completing the project.
“I am also aware that many of the youth are going into apprenticeship; which is good. However, I would like to urge them to take up Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) where they will acquire hands-on skills in addition to formal education”, the Chief advised.
Dr Ayimbire Abonuusum, Chairman of the Tigsitaaba Festival Committee, explained that the rationale behind the construction of the library with the inclusion of the ICT laboratory was to bridge vulnerable school children access to relevant materials and computers to learn.
He believed that the completion of the project would contribute significantly to transforming standard of education in the area and accelerate the community’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly goal four, which puts emphasis on access to quality education for all by 2030.
“It is not everybody who has enough money to buy a computer for their child, so if we construct the library here and equip it with computers and link it to the internet, anybody’s child and adults can access the facility to learn and do research.
“We want to bring the world library to Yorogo so that people anywhere can come to Yorogo and connect to the world library through the internet and do their studies and research”, he said.
The Chairman commended the residents for their efforts and a Philanthropic group in the United States of America led by Mr Adam Schanz who had offered to assist the construction of the project with an amount of GH¢100,000.00.
“We need to still step up our contribution because even if the library is completed, we still need other facilities”, he added.
Themed, "Promoting Social Cohesion for Development: The Role of Festivals”, quiz competition among basic schools in the area and football gala were held as part of activities marking the sixth edition of the festival.
