The New Juaben South Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Municipal Director of Health and other key stakeholders, last weekend cut the sod for the construction of a Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound at Simpoammiensa in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital. The ceremony brought together Assembly officials, the Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Raymond Folli, health authorities, traditional leaders, and community residents. It was attended by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for New Juaben South, Hon. Ransford Owusu Boakye, and his entourage.

In his opening address, the MCE underscored the importance the Assembly attaches to the project and its commitment to enhancing residents’ welfare through improved access to quality healthcare.

Mr. Owusu Boakye reiterated the Assembly’s dedication to improving healthcare delivery across the municipality. He emphasized that the construction of the CHPS compound at Simpoammiensa was timely and necessary, given the growing population and increasing demand for accessible healthcare services in the area. Upon completion, he noted, the facility would provide essential services, including maternal and child health care, disease prevention, and basic treatment, thereby reducing the burden on more distant health centres.

As part of the formal proceedings, the contract document for the project was officially handed over to Vain Enterprise, the construction firm tasked with ensuring quality work that will benefit future generations.

Receiving the document, the firm’s representative assured stakeholders of their readiness to deliver a high-quality facility within the stipulated timeframe. According to him, the project is expected to be completed within nine months, barring any unforeseen challenges.

The project follows closely on the heels of the successful completion of a CHPS compound at Agavenya, which has already made a measurable impact on healthcare delivery in its catchment area. That facility has significantly enhanced access to healthcare, particularly for vulnerable groups, and serves as a model for subsequent projects within the municipality. Stakeholders expressed confidence that the Simpoammiensa CHPS compound would replicate the successes recorded at Agavenya.

In addition to the healthcare initiative, the Assembly used the occasion to highlight ongoing and planned interventions aimed at improving access to safe and reliable water sources across several communities. It was announced that six mechanized boreholes would be drilled in Nyamekrom, Old Estate, Kantudu, Social Welfare, Nsukwao, and Tanoso. These projects are intended to address persistent water challenges and reduce residents’ dependence on unsafe water sources, which often pose serious public health risks.

During the engagement, community members were taken through the scope of the CHPS project, including the facilities to be constructed and the services to be offered upon completion. The project timeline was outlined, with assurances that all necessary measures had been put in place to ensure smooth execution.

In his remarks, the Krontihene of Densuano, Nana Kwame Nkansa, applauded the Assembly’s management for the gesture, noting that the facility would go a long way to improve healthcare for residents. He reaffirmed the community’s commitment to safeguarding the project and stressed that improving access to quality healthcare remains a top priority. Nana Nkansa added that the CHPS compound would serve not only the people of Simpoammiensa but also surrounding communities.
