This year's celebration is a departure from the usual fanfare that always characterizes the anniversary which is usually held at the Black Stars Square and brings together security personnel, students, workers, among others.
The presidency earlier in the year announced changes in this year's celebration cancelling the regional rotation that was introduced by the previous administration.
President John Dramani Mahama in his anniversary address disclosed that the government saved 95% of the GHC20 million budgetary allocations for this year’s anniversary as a result of the scaled-down ceremony to save cost and in solidarity with labour unions acceptance of the 10% base pay increase as the government takes steps to reset the country and improve the economic fortunes of the country.
The theme for the 68th Anniversary "Reflect, Review, and Reset" was graced with a Military Guard, poetry recital, and cultural performances by students.
