According to the District Chief Executive (DCE), Musah Abdul Rashid, the Assembly has successfully engaged traditional authorities and completed all necessary documentation, including the site plan, which has been forwarded to the Ministry of Local Government for approval.
The project is currently awaiting the ministry’s prototype design before physical work begins.
“We are done with everything. What is holding the project now is the common design, and the ministry, in consultation with relevant institutions, is putting together a unique design for all districtssimilar to how His Excellency the President introduced the E-Blocks,” the DCE explained.
The DCE further noted that the Assembly has completed land acquisition processes and is fully prepared to commence construction once the final design is received.
Preliminary information suggests that the new market complex will feature modern facilities, including a crèche, a bank, a police station, and a pharmacy, among others. These additions are expected to enhance economic activity in the area and create numerous employment opportunities for residents.
The market will be located at Wulensi, the district capital, following approval by the General Assembly.
In a related development, the DCE disclosed that the Assembly is also working to strengthen its internally generated funds (IGF) to complement allocations from the central government. He revealed that the Assembly managed to mobilize only GHs 175,000 in 2024, describing the amount as “woefully inadequate.”
He attributed the low revenue performance to inadequate supervision and the politicization of revenue collection, noting that some collectors were recruited on political grounds, which affected accountability.
“We have addressed these issues, and going forward, we expect a significant improvement in our IGF collection,” the DCE assured.
The 24-hour economy model market project forms part of government’s broader agenda to promote round-the-clock economic activities and enhance local development across districts.
