Special needs education to be made free in Ghana - Haruna
Government is set to make education for persons with special needs free across all levels.

The Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu disclosed this in parliament on Wednesday, November 3, 2025 stating that the President John Dramani Mahama will make this known early next year.
"Mr. Speaker, I'm happy to note that from the first of January, 2026, President Mahama will make a formal declaration, declaring education for all persons with special needs free in Ghana".
He said it is their hope to make this declaration an enduring legacy, where people who fall within this group do not have to worry about financing their education at any level.
As a step towards improving their living conditions in schools, the Minister announced that their current GHC8.00 feeding allowance per day will be increased to GHC15 per day.
An amendment to the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) Act is in parliament to this effect. He stated that part of the amendment is to declare special needs education free in Ghana.
The amendment is added will oblige GETFUND to make a minimum allocation of Sixty-five to Hundred Million Ghana Cedis dedicated to their feeding. Significant to this amendment will be the provision of assistive devices to aid their living.
Mr. Haruna Iddrisu who was contributing to a statement in parliament on International Day of Persons with Disabilities said what we need is a just and equitable world, and recognized challenges faced by persons with disabilities in the country despite efforts to improve their status.
He assured that the government will continue to execute interventions to PwDs, adding not only has the President this year introduced Free Tertiary Education policy for PwDs, but he has also directed that the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) for PwDs be increased from 3% to 5% which is disbursed at the local level with the Federation of Disabled People playing vital role in its accessibility.
This fund is usually disbursed to support economic ventures of PwDs aimed at making them economically self-sufficient.
