The project forms part of the Government of Ghana’s nationwide 24-Hour Economy Initiative spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama to stimulate local economic development across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Paulina Akabila disclosed that the modern market facility is expected to be completed within 12 months and will significantly transform commercial activities within the municipality.

The market project will feature cold-chain storage facilities, security posts, modern sanitary facilities, and a 24-hour lighting system designed to support continuous trading and improve market operations.

According to the MCE, the initiative is expected to boost local commerce by improving market accessibility, supporting traders and farmers, reducing post-harvest losses, and creating employment opportunities for residents.

She described the project as a major milestone in the municipality’s development agenda and reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to driving economic growth and improving livelihoods.

Construction officially commenced following the handing-over ceremony, marking what stakeholders described as a new era of economic transformation for the municipality.

The event was attended by representatives of Osaberima Adu Darko III, the Municipal Coordinating Director, heads of departments, Assembly staff, the project contractor, and officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Residents and stakeholders have welcomed the initiative with optimism, expressing hope that the project will unlock new business opportunities and accelerate development across West Akim Municipality.
