The intervention, spearheaded by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Samuel Somuah, benefited members of the local chapter of the Ghana Federation of Persons with Disabilities and forms part of government's social protection agenda aimed at promoting economic independence among PWDs.

Beneficiaries received various items tailored to their specific needs and economic aspirations, including container shops, agricultural inputs, fufu pounding machines, refrigerators, freezers, students' mattresses, crutches, wheelchairs and other assistive devices.

Addressing the beneficiaries, the President of the Sekyere Central branch of the Ghana Federation of Persons with Disabilities, Mr. Kwaku Tawiah, urged recipients to make judicious use of the support to improve their livelihoods and inspire confidence in the programme.

He expressed appreciation to the Government and the District Assembly for their continued support to persons with disabilities, citing the Assembly's contribution towards the renovation of the Disability Resource Centre. He, however, appealed for additional assistance to complete the remaining works on the facility.

The Head of the Social Welfare and Community Development Department, Mr. Emmanuel Haruna, explained that the intervention is designed to promote self-reliance and reduce poverty among persons with disabilities.

He stressed that the long-term success of the programme would depend largely on how beneficiaries utilize the support provided to establish sustainable livelihoods and improve their living standards.

The Chairman of the Disability Fund Management Committee, Hon. Philip Agyei, encouraged beneficiaries to share their success stories within their communities to motivate other eligible persons to take advantage of the initiative.

He disclosed that the Committee's approval process is guided by the specific economic needs of applicants, ensuring that support packages are aligned with the livelihood activities of beneficiaries.

According to him, the intervention covers four key areas: economic empowerment support, assistance for caregivers of persons with disabilities, educational and skills training support, and medical assistance for persons with disabilities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Samuel Somuah reaffirmed the Assembly's determination to improve the welfare of persons with disabilities through targeted interventions that promote dignity and financial independence.

He commended the leadership of the Federation for acknowledging the Assembly's efforts towards the renovation of the Disability Resource Centre and assured them that outstanding works would be completed in due course.

The DCE also emphasized that the beneficiary selection process was transparent and devoid of political considerations, stressing that development interventions under his administration would continue to serve all residents irrespective of their political backgrounds.

He further announced that the Assembly would institute monitoring mechanisms to track the progress of beneficiaries and assess the impact of the support on their economic activities.

Hon. Somuah assured persons with disabilities who are yet to benefit from the programme that they would be considered in subsequent phases of the intervention.

The latest disbursement highlights the Sekyere Central District Assembly's ongoing efforts to foster an inclusive society where persons with disabilities are empowered with the tools, opportunities and support needed to participate fully in socio-economic development.
