The total length of Birim North District’s roads is 395.6 kilometres. This is made up of 101 km of trunk roads, 206 km of feeder roads and 88.6 km of earth surfaces.
The Ghana Highway Authority undertakes the periodic reshaping of the two trunk roads, which run from New Abirem to Nkawkaw and Oda respectively.
The District Assembly runs a feeder road programme which undertakes the periodic reshaping and on the spot improvement of some feeder roads in the district.
There is a post office at New Abirem and 21 postal agencies spread across the district, although most of these are not functioning at the moment.Under the Ghana Government’s Rural Electrification Programme, New Abirem and seven other major communities are connected to the national grid.
Many other communities have also been connected to the national grid under the Government Self-Help Electrification Programme.
The district is supplied water through 188 boreholes, 53 hand-dug wells and five mechanised borehole or pipe-borne water systems.
The District Assembly has provided 23 pump-driven boreholes in 17 rural communities with support from the Agricultural Sector Improvement Project, ASIP.
A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Birim North District Assembly and Ghana Water and Sewerage Company in 1999 to transfer the ownership and management of three water systems in New Abirem, Akuase and Ntronang to the Assembly.
The district has 124 primary schools, 63 junior secondary schools and four senior secondary schools. The pupil-teacher ratio for primary schools is 1:32, while for junior secondary schools, the ratio is 1:15.
There are four health centres at New Abirem, Ayirebi, Anyinase and Brenase. There are two mission clinics at Ntronang and Ofoase, and another eight community clinics spread across the district.
In addition, there are several privately owned maternity homes in the district. Financial services are provided by two rural banks at Asuopra and Mponua. The two major markets are at New Abirem and Ntronang.
Transportation
In the Birim North District, the mode of transport is largely by road. Other modes such as rail, river and air are non-existent. The total length of roads is 395.6km, made up of
• 101 km of trunk roads and
• 206 km of feeder roads, made up of 88.6 km of gravel and earth surfaces.
Most of the trunk road are not tarred and without regular maintenance. In addition only 88.6 km of feeder roads in the district are of fairly good condition. The need for massive road improvement and reconstruction to increase accessibility cannot, therefore be over emphasized since transportation provides the necessary linkage to other sectors like agriculture, industries and social services.
Posts and Telecommunication Facilities
There are only six (6) telephone lines servicing the district of a population of 151401. The district now has access to mobile telephone network by the courtesy of Scancom Limited, operators of Areeba mobile telephone service. Other networks services providers are making frantic efforts to expand their service to the district. The postal system consists only of postal agencies, most of which are not functioning and one District Post Office thus giving an access rate of 15.6%. Delivery of mails is occasioned by long delays throughout the district. There are no delivery vans, hence there is irregular collection of mails from the nearest general post office at Nkawkaw or Oda.
Energy
The principal source of energy for cooking is firewood and charcoal, which encourages deforestation. Other sources of energy are petroleum products, which include kerosene for lighting and petrol and diesel oil for motor vehicles, corn-mills and electricity generators. Until 1995, there was no public electricity supply in the whole of the district, but with the extension of power supply to the district as part of government’s District Capital Electrification Scheme, New Abirem, the district capital and settlements north of it like Afosu, Akoase, Noyem, Pankese and others have electric power, giving about 31 percent of the population access to electricity. The number of communities hooked on the line will be increased so as to increase the number of economic activities in the district.
