Committee Recommends Upgrade of 33 Districts and Municipalities - Minister

The Ministry of Local Government confirmed that the committee, chaired by Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has proposed upgrading 12 municipalities and one district to metropolitan status, alongside 20 districts to municipal status.
The development follows a long-standing demand from citizens. The Ministry revealed that it received numerous petitions between 2020 and 2024 requesting the elevation of various districts and municipalities. While executive approval was initially granted in December 2024, the legislative process was stalled due to administrative issues arising from the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections, preventing the required legal instruments from being laid before Parliament.
In response, the Ministry constituted a Technical Committee in December 2025 to review relevant data, engage with traditional leaders and stakeholders, and propose a clear path forward.
Presenting the findings, the Ministry stated that the committee has submitted its report and recommendations. The report is currently with the Office of the President for consideration and executive approval. Once approval is secured, the Ministry will follow due process by laying the necessary Legislative Instruments before Parliament for passage.
The proposed upgrades represent a major step in strengthening local governance and decentralisation, bringing administrative services and development closer to the people.
