The family of Sara Adwoa Safo, the former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, is demanding justice and calling for a review of police procedures after the suspects accused of attacking her were granted bail—a decision the family describes as a "miscarriage of justice."
At a tense press conference held on Thursday, June 25, 2026, Dr. E.Y. Boakye, spokesperson for the family, expressed outrage that the perpetrators of what he called a "heinous crime" against their sister and daughter are now free, allegedly celebrating their release as though the assault never happened.
Family Blames Police for "Wrongful" Charges
The family's primary grievance centers on the charges leveled against the suspects. Dr. Boakye contended that had the police applied the appropriate charges—which the family believes should have been attempted murder or grievous bodily harm—the court would have been compelled to deny bail, keeping the alleged attackers in custody.
"We are deeply disappointed in the police service," Dr. Boakye stated. "The charge sheet presented to the court did not reflect the severity of the crime committed against Adwoa Safo. As a result, the judge had little choice but to grant bail. This is not justice — this is a failure of due diligence."
The family also expressed dismay over reports that the suspects exhibited what they described as "jubilation and pride" upon returning home, further deepening the emotional trauma suffered by the former MP and her loved ones.
Adwoa Safo's Condition Remains Critical
According to the family, Sara Adwoa Safo's medical condition remains critical and "dangerous." She is reportedly suffering from severe facial swelling and experiencing significant breathing difficulties, requiring round-the-clock medical attention.
"Her condition is not stable. Every day is a battle," Dr. Boakye revealed. "We are praying for her recovery, but the road ahead is long and uncertain."
Plans to Fly Adwoa Safo Abroad for Treatment
In a bid to secure the best possible care for the former lawmaker, the family announced that plans are at an advanced stage to fly Adwoa Safo overseas for specialized medical treatment.
Dr. Boakye disclosed that doctors attending to her have strongly recommended international medical evacuation. The family is currently finalizing arrangements, including identifying a suitable hospital and medical team abroad.
"We are about finalizing the specific hospital she will be taken to. This is not a decision we take lightly, but it is necessary for her survival and recovery," he added.
Government Steps In with Beefed-Up Security
Amid the family's anguish, there was a note of gratitude for the government's response. Dr. Boakye confirmed that security has been significantly beefed up at the facility where Adwoa Safo is currently receiving care.
He specifically commended President John Dramani Mahama for his personal intervention and commitment to ensuring that the former MP is well-catered for.
"The President has shown genuine concern. We appreciate his role so far and his assurance that Adwoa Safo's welfare remains a priority," Dr. Boakye said.
Calls for Transparency and Accountability
The family has called on the police service to review its handling of the case and provide a full explanation for the charges that were filed. They are also urging the Attorney General's office to consider taking over the prosecution to ensure that justice is served.
"We are not asking for special treatment. We are asking for the law to take its full course. If the right charges are brought, we trust the courts will do what is right," Dr. Boakye emphasized.
What Happened to Adwoa Safo?
Details surrounding the attack that left Adwoa Safo hospitalized remain sketchy. However, sources close to the family indicate that the incident occurred earlier this month under circumstances that are still under investigation.
But the family disclosed at the press conference that she only went to her brother's house on that fateful day to caution him about the implications of them going ahead with the coronation since there is an injunction on the process.
More so, the whole family (Siblings) was to be there, so Sara Adwoa Safo didn't go there to incite any violence.
The former MP, who served as Deputy Majority Leader and Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection in the previous administration, has been a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics.
