The sector is dominated by small-scale, unorganized farmers who rely on natural rainfall and labor-intensive methods. Despite its traditional roots, agriculture in Central Tongu stands as a powerful engine of growth, supporting crop farming, animal rearing, and fishing and feeding local markets.
Statistics show that agriculture, forestry, and fishing constitute the largest industrial sector, engaging about 68.1% of the economically active population aged 15 years and older. This mix of formal and informal economic activity provides a broad spectrum of opportunities across communities, helping to cushion seasonal and market fluctuations. In addition to farming, the district’s economy features manufacturing (approximately 10.6%) and wholesale and retail trade, including repair services for motor vehicles and motorcycles (about 7.2%), which together create a diversified economic landscape.
Recent discussions have centered on boosting agricultural productivity while safeguarding the environment and ensuring sustainable livelihoods. Key initiatives include improving access to quality seeds and inputs, expanding irrigation where feasible, and strengthening support services for smallholder farmers to increase yields and incomes. Local leaders emphasize the importance of linking farming communities to markets, finance, and technology through coordinated programs and partnerships.
Looking ahead, Central Tongu aims to build on its agricultural strengths by promoting value-added activities, strengthening farmer organizations, and expanding training opportunities. These steps are expected to enhance food security, create more sustainable jobs, and drive broader economic prosperity for residents.
Residents are encouraged to support local agriculture by buying locally produced staples, participating in farmers’ markets, and engaging with extension services offered by the district.
