Tano South MCE hands over 1,500 bags of fertiliser to support farmers

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tano South, Hon. Emmanuel Kwame Frimpong, has handed over 1,500 bags of fertiliser to the Municipal Department of Food and Agriculture to support farmers and enhance agricultural productivity across the municipality.

The intervention is aimed at increasing crop yields by providing free fertiliser to farmers, particularly young people engaged in agriculture, as part of efforts to strengthen food production and improve food security.

The handing-over ceremony was attended by the MCE, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr Abdul Rahman Salam, the Municipal Director of Food and Agriculture, Mr Paul Addai, heads of departments, and representatives of farmers' cooperatives.

Receiving the fertiliser on behalf of the department, Mr Addai expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his continued commitment to agricultural development and food security. He also thanked the MCE for facilitating the intervention, describing it as a timely initiative that would help improve agricultural productivity in the municipality.

Mr Addai said the department expected a smooth distribution process because farmers had earlier been encouraged to form cooperative groups, which would ensure the efficient distribution of the fertiliser to registered beneficiaries.

He assured farmers that the Department of Food and Agriculture would continue to work closely with the Municipal Assembly to ensure the fertiliser was distributed fairly, transparently, and efficiently to the intended beneficiaries.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Frimpong commended President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, for their commitment to promoting agricultural development and supporting farmers across the country.

He described agriculture as the backbone of Ghana's economy and reaffirmed the government's commitment to equipping farmers with essential agricultural inputs to increase productivity and improve livelihoods.

According to the MCE, the free fertiliser distribution is intended to boost crop yields, support local food production, and encourage more young people to venture into farming as a sustainable source of employment.

Hon. Frimpong also highlighted a number of ongoing and planned development initiatives in the municipality, including the establishment of farmer service centres, the construction of a 24-hour economy market, the rehabilitation and construction of roads serving farming communities, the installation of solar streetlights, and other projects aimed at improving the socio-economic well-being of residents.

He urged the Department of Food and Agriculture and leaders of farmers' associations to ensure the fertiliser was distributed fairly and transparently while preventing any form of misuse.

At the ceremony, Hon. Frimpong officially handed over 1,500 bags of fertiliser comprising 1,000 bags of NPK and 500 bags of urea to the Municipal Director of Food and Agriculture, Mr. Paul Addai, for onward distribution to registered farmer groups across the municipality.
