NDC's Elikplim wins Dome-Kwabenya Parliamentary seat

Madam Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, National Democratic Congress' (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Dome-Kwabenya, has won the seat with 51, 634 votes.

Her closest contender, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Mr Michael Aaron Oquaye garnered 50,477 votes.

She takes over from NPP's Madam Sarah Adwoa Sarfo.

The election process was not without challenges as the NDC and NPP supporters accused each other of attempting to rig the elections.

Loyalists of Elikplim trooped to the collation centre in wild jubilation when their choice was announced as the winner.

Dome-Kwabenya is in the Ga East District of the Greater Accra Region with 172,907, the highest number of voters nationwide, followed by Ashaiman and Amasaman.

It was a highly contested election with a field of four candidates: Michael Aaron Oquaye,  Junior, NPP, Madam Dora Nyarko, PNC, Remy Paa Kow Edmundson, Independence Candidate and Madam Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, contesting, for the NDC.

The Constituency, a stronghold of the NPP, a The seat occupied by Madam Adwoa Sarfo, who lost her party primaries due her persistent absence from Parliament and the constituency also lost her ministerial position.

The NDC, took advantage of the situation, coupled with voters' dissatisfaction with the NPP led government by presenting Madam Elikplim, as she is affectionately called by her fans, who had all along played second fiddle to Adwoa Safoa. 

A former staff of the World Vision Ghana, her political message was tied to five thematic areas, including safety and security, inclusive governance, job creation as well as the provision of infrastructure.

An old girl of Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School, she has a Master of Philosophy Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the Methodist University, Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Linguistics from the University of Ghana.
