Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, one of the two main contenders in the presidential election has already conceded defeat having called Mr. John Mahama to congratulate him as the president elect.

Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia who spoke to the nation today, December 8, 2024 at around 9:00AM even before any communication from the Electoral Commission disclosed that he has already put a call through to the former President to this effect.

According to him, the data from their (NPP) own internal collation of the election results “indicate that former President, John Dramani Mahama has worn the presidential election decisively. The NDC has also worn the parliamentary election even though we await final collation for a number of seats. However, I believe ultimately that these would not change the overall outcome”.

He also affirmed that his action is in line with the Peace Pact signed ahead of the election in which he stated that he was sure of two things; Ghana will win and peace will reign. “The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect that decision with all humility”.

“I am making this concession speech before the official announcement by the Electoral Commission to avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country. It is important that the world and investor community continuous to believe in the peaceful and democratic character of Ghana. These are our most important assets. Ghana is more important than our individual and political ambitions and we must always put Ghana first.”

He noted that though the outcome of the election is not what they hoped for, it is part of the democratic process.

Dr Bawumia also pledged their full support for the incoming government in the transition process, adding that as committed democrats they will ensure smooth transition process so that the government will continue seamlessly.
