HOMOWO CELEBRATION: Nii Ashitey Akomfra III calls for unity

Homowo which literally means hooting at hunger is celebrated by the Ga-Dangbes to signify a time in history when their ancestors faced a great famine and ultimately came out of it. At the heart of this celebration is the paramount chief, Gb?ts??l? Nii Ashitey Akomfra III, who leads a solemn procession through the town, symbolizing the unity and resilience among people of the community.
Speaking with Ghanadistricts.com, after the sprinkling of the traditional food “Kpokpoi, Nii Ashitey Akomfra III, the paramount chief of Teshie explained that, ‘Kpokpoi’ is believed to nourish the spirits of the departed, ensuring that they remain connected to the living. He added that it is also an offering to the gods, and prayer for protection and blessings for the community. He called for unity, peace and co-existence among the people. He further urged his people to ensure togetherness and work towards the progress of the youth by empowering them in their various fields of endeavors.
Gbetsoolo Nii Ashitey Akomfra appealed to the people not to go into the new year in disunity, name calling, backbiting among others but should rather love one another and share ideas that will develop their talents to become better people in the near future.
The divisional Chief of Teshie who is also the Teshie Dzasetse, Nii Ashikwei Kwao Botchway, on his part revealed that there will be a health screening for the people of Teshie as part of efforts to help improve health in the area. According to him, there will be an orientation for all the traditional councils in Ga-Dangbme with every council having two representatives as part of efforts to equip traditional rulers on land documentation, contract agreement and others.
Torgbi Nii Kpami Gbedesu iii of Aflao Tradional Area stated that they are all one people per the history of how their ancestors migrated hence his involvement in this year’s Homowo festival. He urged the people of Teshie to celebrate the festival in peace.
The festival brought together many people in and outside the traditional area that walked through the streets to witness the festival.
