He made the appeal at a day’s engagement with about 50 youth drawn from 5 youth groups in the district organized by the National Commission for Civic Education NCCE under the Preventing and Controlling Violent Extremism initiative funded by the European Union.

The initiative has the objective of fostering a sense of unity and patriotism in the youth to help reduce the incidence of violence and radicalization amongst them.

Inspector Diabah encouraged the youth to be patriotic and desist from any acts that could jeopardize the peace of the country adding that it is important for them to assist his outfit by reporting people with suspicious character for appropriate action.

Inspector Ankomah Akosah of the Ghana Immigration Service who spoke on online radicalization as well as misinformation and disinformation advised the youth not to be swayed by the trappings of wealth at the peril of their lives.

On misinformation and disinformation, he said its effects could be adverse and far reaching and urged them to verify information before sharing especially on social media.

The chairman of the Local Council of Churches Pastor Hillary Sedem asked the youth to be ambassadors of peace among their peers.
While advising them not to allow themselves to be used to perpetuate any acts of violence he urged the youth to stay away from anything that could get them into trouble with the law.

He asked them to always resort to negotiation, mediation and arbitration in order to find solutions to any misunderstanding that might come their way instead of violence.

Pastor Sedem also urged them to respect the ethnic, religious and political affiliation of others to ensure unity and peace in the country.
Participants asked questions to which answers were provided and made diverse contributions towards the attainment of the objectives of the initiative.

Earlier in a welcome address, the acting district director of the Commission Mr. David Kumogsua Dubong said the engagement has become necessary because violent extremism still remains a serious threat to our national security especially when the country prepares for the upcoming general elections.

Participants comprising 29 males and 21 females were from the Achabata fun club, Biakoye artisan association, Anyobode fun club, Konokoko youth association and Kokomba youth association.
